Alex Lacasse Shoots Music Video At Sir Wil
Alex Lacasse - Sir Wil's Future Star
Sir Wil student Alex Lacasse may be North America’s next great musical sensation. Last March, Alex and friend Keegan Dillabaugh wrote and recorded a song, which Legend Entertainment picked up and played on one of Toronto’s radio stations. Representatives from Universal Music Canada heard it and immediately invited Alex in for an audition. It wasn’t long after, that Alex signed a major music contract with Universal. Since then he has had four trips to Cincinnati to record five original new songs for an upcoming album. One of these, a pop song called “My Girl”,
was co-written with Sir Wil’s Michael Guilbault who will also be getting royalties on its sale. Alex’s first song "Like This Like That" was released March 23rd on radio stations across Canada, and on iTunes, with a music video soon after. Universal is confident that he will have a major career in the music industry. You can follow Alex on Twitter, My Space and Facebook.
You can also check out Alex Lacasse's multi-talented performances on Laurier Live, our in-school morning announcement site.
Orléans Star Showcases Alex Lacasse
Young Orléans song writer snags record deal
Alex Lacasse, 17, is releasing his first single under Universal Music Canada. Sir Wilfrid Laurier student Alex Lacasse is crediting a lucky chain of events for turning his dream into reality. The 17-year-old Orléans musician has recently signed on with Universal Music Canada after the label heard his first original song, and is set to release his first single this month.
While the budding pop sensation calls his good fortune lucky, there has been a lot of hard work over the years. But instead of electric instruments and synthesizers, Lacasse's story starts instead with the classics.
Lacasse's first love was the piano, where he studied under the Royal Conservatory curriculum. Wanting to expand his repertoire, the young musician enrolled in singing lessons, focusing instead on contemporary work.
The budding artist soon gravitated toward trendier tunes, opting to use the classical techniques he'd learned to create modern music. By his 10th birthday he started to perform for audiences, singing at retirement homes, weddings, galas and local fairs.
"I built a bit of a name in Ottawa," Lacasse says, explaining people who heard him would ask him to sing at another event. His father acted as his manager at the time, he recounts.
As time marched on, Lacasse started writing lyrics and music. With the help of his best friend, Lacasse penned his first song about a year ago. Called So into You, the song is about falling in love and being afraid to tell the girl about his feelings.
"I put all my heart into it," Lacasse says. "I tried to make it deep but also as general as possible."
He sent it to a local radio station that, in turn, shipped it to a Toronto station. In what Lacasse calls a lucky chain of events, his song eventually made its way to a producer south of the border and then a label took notice of the young musician.
Universal Music Canada liked what they heard and signed Lacasse to an Artist Development Recording Package.
"I have to thank the radio stations," he says. "I'm happy they saw something in me."
"This is a dream come true."
With a label now behind him, Lacasse has recorded four songs. His first single with Universal, Like This, Like That, will be released across Canada in about a week and will hit the iTunes store on March 23. Lacasse says he'll need people to request the song to help solidify his position in the business.
Busier than ever, the Sir Wilfrid Laurier student has already started taking dance lessons in preparation for a music video, which will likely be shot in the next month.
"If it really happens it will be a crazy thing," Lacasse says of the video, noting it's a new step for him. "I'm very excited."
A five-song EP is also scheduled to be released in the next month, Lacasse says. Marketing is already underway, with a Facebook group, MySpace page and Twitter feed already set up.
Meanwhile, one of Lacasse's songs is already playing on the radio. He had an opportunity to co-write for Universal's Girlicious and took the label up on the offer. Over You is the first single from the band's sophomore album.
