Welcome To Sir Wilfrid Laurier
Alex Lacasse - Sir Wil's Future Star

100302_93609_0.jpgSir Wil student Alex Lacasse may be North America’s next great musical sensation.  Last March, Alex and friend Keegan Dillabaugh wrote and recorded a song, which Legend Entertainment picked up and played on one of Toronto’s radio stations.  Representatives from Universal Music Canada heard it and immediately invited Alex in for an audition.  It wasn’t long after, that Alex signed a major music contract with Universal. Since then he has had four trips to Cincinnati to record five original new songs for an upcoming album. One of these, a pop song called “My Girl”, was co-written with Sir Wil’s Michael Guilbault who will also be getting royalties on its sale.  Alex’s first song "Like This Like That" was released March 15th on radio stations across Canada, and will come out on iTunes March 23rd, with a music video soon after.  Universal is confident that he will have a major career in the music industry. You can follow Alex on Twitter, My Space and Facebook.

You can also check out Alex Lacasse's multi-talented performances on Laurier Live, our in-school morning announcement site.

High School Newsletter from Ottawa Public Health
Immunization for Teens

Teens need a booster for tetanus and diphtheria vaccines ten years after the preschool booster, usually between 14 and 16 years of age. This vaccine is mandatory in Ontario and is provided free to all students. The vaccine recommended for adolescents is called Adacel. This vaccine has added protection against whooping cough, or pertussis.
Whooping cough still frequently occurs in Ontario. The Canadian Pediatric Society reports that many teenagers are diagnosed with whooping cough. This can be a serious illness with severe coughing spells, shortness of breath, and weight loss due to difficulty eating and vomiting. These symptoms can cause sleep disruptions, fatigue, and missed days at school. The coughing spells can last for 2 to 3 weeks, and the illness can last from 6 to 12 weeks. For more information on whooping cough and on the vaccines routinely given to teens, see the following website: http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/immunization/dTap.htm#pertussis

Ontario students are required to have up-to-date immunization, including the booster dose for tetanus and diphtheria.
To avoid suspension from school, make sure to update
the student’s record with Ottawa Public Health.

Sir Wil Students Join Ottawa's Tech Elite

OCRI-Award-8.png
Seven of Sir Wil's Broadcasting students were honoured at the OCRI technology awards banquet for their commitment to both the community and their use of technology.  They shared the stage with award winners from Ottawa's leading high tech companies and post secondary academic institutions. Andrew Newby, Amrit Jande, Will Fairclough, Heather Giles, Asif Deen, and Paul Thompson received Ottawa's High School IT Innovator Award for the work that they did in producing a week-long telethon that raised $15,000 for the oncology unit at CHEO.  They dedicated the award to Eric Shaw (posthumously).  Eric's parents also attended the presentation.

Eric Shaw
June 8th, 1989 – January 12th, 2007

Eric-Shaw-Memorial8.png

On Friday January 12th, 2007, Eric Shaw, one of Sir Wil’s senior students, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.  At just seventeen, Eric had won the admiration of everyone here when he led the campaign that raised $15,000 for the cancer unit at CHEO. Unfortunately, during the fundraising telethon, he was diagnosed with his third case of cancer, a type that was very aggressive.  He came through the surgery to remove the tumor very well, however, it quickly regrew itself in a matter of two weeks. Eric will live on in our memories.

Eric Shaw Inspires Students to Raise $15,000 for Cancer
CHEO-Cheque8.png
Eric Shaw is a seventeen-year-old student at Sir Wil.  During the two weeks before Christmas, he and six other students planned a telethon to raise the level of caring in the students across the school.  Since Eric had previously had cancer, it was decided that the money would go to the oncology unit at CHEO.  Unfortunately, before the telethon even started Eric was diagnosed with his third case of cancer and given a very short time to live.  Even so he pushed on and motivated students to raise $15,000 in 6 days. This was a major feat that everyone at Sir Wil Should be proud of.

Sir Wil Students Interviewed on CTV News

[Image:image001.gif] Two Sir Wil Students, Asif Deen and Paul Thompson visit CTV News for an interview with Leigh Chapple on their new video series Hormones.  The programs are a project that they have taken on to try to help their peers deal with controversial issues in teen lives.  The first two programs are complete and cover the proper way to put on a condom and the hazards of oral sex.  In the works are additional shows on such topics as drugs, bullying, being teen cool by being yourself, racism etc.

So far reaction to the series has been very positive with both adults and students.
